LAS ROSAS

A Change of Fields

On the outskirts of Subachoque, Colombia, we find Santa Ana, a property mixing agriculture, milk production, mining and flower cultivation. With the cultures’ white enclosures, a world of over 700 people working and moving under the fabrics reveals itself. From early mornings to late nights, taking care of the roses, we want to buy and receive. It is an industrial space where roses are pruned, handled, cut, packed and sometimes even sprayed for customers worldwide.

The studio Objects as Grounds deals with geographic tropes to link architecture and landscape architecture. With a focus on the objectification and representation of the tropical high Andean mountains, the studio digs into the pre-conceived scale-less figures that better establish relations with a modified ground.

This project experiments with a given system of grids and constructions that already exist on the site. With over 60 large greenhouses, the aim is to create an oasis in the middle of the industrial production, a greenhouse still related to the production. The design includes pathways that will allow you to turn around, stop and look at the production in new ways. It furthermore includes stairways, platforms, walls and ceilings that contribute to a new spatial logic.

In other words, the experiment comes to be a disorganised display of the production fields. Instead of continuous planting of one sort, roses are mixed and displayed under the same roof - a mix of colour, species and form interchange. With the help of curved walls, the project draws out a series of enclosures for single roses or bouquets of experimental flowers.

Three larger platforms are lifted above the ground to let visitor experience the on-ground enclosures and open fields from above. The platforms then become landscapes in themselves, where you will be able to experience the experimental roses as an unrestrained oasis.

Las Rosas is a space, changing the grid of fields, letting us come closer to the beauty that is to be created under the white wide landscape seen from above.
